Growing up in California, Candice Renee Appleby caught her first wave at age nine and began surfing competitively soon after at age ten. While in high school, Candice was the captain of the National Champion San Clemente Surf Team and upon graduation, she was asked to participate in the World Games in South Africa as a member of the US Amateur Team. She declined the offer however, as she already had prior plans of moving to Hawaii to further her education and athletic career.
After graduating from the University of Hawaii in 2008 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Tropical Plants & Soil Science, Candice decided to return to California and currently calls the beach town of San Clemente, home. She has been competing in professional Stand Up Paddle competitions and open ocean SUP races for almost eight years, and in the summer of 2008, Candice became the first woman to beat the men at the Duke Kahanamoku Ocean Festival Contest. She then went on to win her fifth consecutive Battle of the Paddle in October of 2012 and was featured as “Female Paddler of the Year” in the worldwide publication, Stand Up Journal in 2010 and 2012.
Beyond SUP, Candice also competes in ocean triathlons, various Pro longboard events, body surfing, canoe surfing, prone paddleboarding, lifeguard competitions and other ASP sanctioned events. She is the CFO/Co-Founder of Performance Paddling LLC, a host on the “Wake Up SUP Show” featured on www.supconnect.com, and this year she proudly launched an Anti-Bullying campaign called “Stand Up for the Children.” In her free time, Candice volunteers with the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation, where she takes Marines from the Wounded Warriors Battalion surfing as a part of their ocean therapy.
It is in the balance of fitness, competition, travel, family and faith that she is able to appreciate all of her accomplishments, as well as inviting new opportunities into her life.
