Surfing in a Winter Wonderland with Daniel Jones

Traveling the world, chasing swells, searching for that perfect wave. This is just another day for Ocean Minded Ambassador, Daniel Jones. Throughout his travels, Daniel has seen more of Mother Nature’s hidden treasures than one can fathom and his trip to Alaska’s Kenai Fjords was no exception.

As a Hawaiian Native who grew up on North Shore of Oahu, Daniel hasn’t had to go far to surf some of the world’s best breaks. So where does one travel when they already live in paradise? Where the icy mountain’s meet the ocean, of course: Alaska. Joining the Milo shipmates and friend’s Trevor Gordon, Michael Kew, and Nico Manos, Daniel and crew embarked on their journey to Kenai Fjords where they searched the icy blue waters for perfect waves and explored the national parks’ beautiful scenery.

“The trip was in April so the snow was just beginning to melt, which made surfing river mouths a numbing experience. We spent a total of 10 days on the boat. Going up, down and around every nook and cranny looking for waves. We definitely found some great waves and had some really fun surf sessions during this trip,  but one of the best days was on a flat day.

We anchored way up in this Fjord and took out the stand up paddle boards. We paddled along a sea cliff, through these amazing water falls and then up a river with 5-feet of snow along its banks and a gigantic glacier as the back drop. It was unreal. When it was time to head back, we rode the river currents back out to the ocean, navigating around fallen trees, shallow areas and even some rapids… and you really did not want to fall into that freezing, florescent blue water! The trip was a lot of fun and it was by far, the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.” – Daniel Jones
