Candice Appleby & Anthony Vela Take the Dempsey Holder Surf Contest by Storm

Candice Appleby & Anthony Vela take 1st and 2nd in SUP Divisions

This past Sunday, October 21, 2012, Ocean Minded team riders Candice Appleby and Anthony Vela took the 9th Annual WiLDCOAST Dempsey Holder Surf Contest by storm, literally. Despite the rainy weather and stormy surf, Candice and Anthony (also known as CandAnthony here at Ocean Minded) were amongst 150 other participants who came out to Imperial Beach, making this year the largest contest since it was founded 9 years ago.

“We had more surfers participate in the Dempsey this year than any other year,” said WiLDCOAST Executive Director Serge Dedina. “And given the fact that a storm hit on Sunday, we were lucky to be able to run the contest in 2-4′ sideshore and very contestable waves.”

As a sponsor of the contest, Ocean Minded was proud to support Candice and Anthony in their muilt-sport heats throughout the day’s events. Both Candice and Anthony competed in the Men’s/Women’s, Longboard and Stand-Up Paddle divisions, making them the only two contestants qualifying for the first ever, King/Queen of the Dempsey. As a result, Candice was crowned the Queen of the Dempsey, in addition to her taking home 1st place in the Women’s division and 2nd in Longboard and Stand-Up Paddle divisions. Anthony placed 1st in the Stand-Up Paddle division. Overall, this was a fantastic day for Ocean Minded, CandAnthony and the Dempsey Holder Surf Contest. Until next year!
